Shimla never fails to impress its visitors. Most of the people arrive with plans to roam around the Mall Road, explore colonial architecture or spend their days hopping between viewpoints. I had a similar itinerary, but what I did not expect was that the main tag of the trip would begin before breakfast, simply because of where I stayed.
Like many hotels in Shimla, mine also sat close to a network of walking trails instead of the busiest parts of the town. This small difference largely determined the quality of my stay and shaped a distinct experience. I found myself reaching back to the memory of stepping outside just after sunrise and heading towards the hills. Those quiet walks became the part of Shimla I looked forward to the most.
The best part of the day in Shimla started before the sightseeing
The short period between sunrise and breakfast is what made me love Shimla the most. This brief window feels different, with quiet streets, cold mountain air and serene forests, absorbing every sound except that of the birds. With the walking trails only a few minutes from the hotel, I did not need to arrange transport or spend time navigating busy roads.
Each morning I adored the slow pace. Most trails pass through the tall deodar trees while some others open to a wider panoramic view of layered Himalayan ridges. Each morning unfolded at its own pace. Some trails passed through tall deodar trees. The changing light gradually revealed valleys, rooftops and distant peaks, making familiar scenery look different every few minutes. By the time the town became busy, the day already felt well spent.
A mountain-facing stay changes how Shimla feels
The hotel view was a cherry on top, which constantly drew my attention outdoors. Watching the hills change colours from dawn to dusk determined us to indulge in the beauty slowly and take breaks between sightseeing plans.
Our way back to the hotel never felt like the end of the day. The tall mountains remained part of the experience. The cool evening air and dramatic clouds that drifted across the valleys made the stay at the hotel more appreciated.
Shimla’s walking trails reveal a quieter side of the hill station
Many visitors relate Shimla to its busiest streets, but the surrounding trails tell a different story. They pass through wooded slopes, quiet neighbourhoods and open stretches where the only interruption is the occasional local walker or grazing livestock.
Without the pressure of reaching a viewpoint, the walks became more rewarding. Tiny details are what made this experience stand out. From the scent of pine needles to changing sounds of birds, these moments rarely appear on travel itineraries, yet they become the memories that last the longest.
Staying near Glen Forest makes mornings even better in Shimla
One trail that perfectly captured Shimla’s peaceful side is the Glen Forest trail. Located away from the busiest commercial areas, it winds through dense deodar and pine forests with gentle paths that are well suited for an early morning stroll. The route offers fresh mountain air, birdsong and occasional openings that frame the surrounding hills, making it easy to forget how close the town centre is. Choosing accommodation within easy reach of Glen Forest means the day can begin with nature before moving on to attractions such as Mall Road or the Ridge. Sometimes, a simple walk through the forest becomes just as memorable as the landmarks themselves.
Bottom line
The famous attractions of Shimla delivered exactly what I expected. The unexpected part was how much the stay influenced the entire journey. A mountain-facing hotel beside quiet walking trails turned ordinary mornings into the most memorable part of the visit. Sometimes the best way to experience a hill station is not by covering more attractions but by beginning each day with an unhurried walk through the mountains.
